It’s no exaggeration to say, that bad oral hygiene is one of the biggest enemies of dentistry. The main cause for tooth loss is neglected oral hygiene.

Almost every dental disease can be prevented, if the patients learn to brush and floss properly already at young age.

Effects of bad oral hygiene:

Oral hygieneThere are millions of bacteria in the mouth. While some of them are harmless, others can attack the gums and teeth and start the formation of plaque and tartar. The longer the plaque and tartar remain on the teeth, the more it irritates the gum which becomes swollen and bleed easily and causes bad breath.

The inflammation of the gum is called gingivitis and it’s a form of periodontal disease. In the absence of treatment, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis-bone resorption and ultimately tooth loss, which is an irreversible process.

Researchers have known for a long time that unhealthy teeth can lead to serious health problems. People with gum diseases are for example almost twice as likely to suffer from heart diseases, but there is also a strong connection between diabetes and periodontitis. Another worrisome example is that long lasting serious amount of missing teeth can even cause dementia.

Proper dental cleaning

Healthy teeth make you feel and look good, but they also enable you to speak and eat properly. The most important part of tooth care happens at home. To brush and floss regularly and properly are the key issues. Regularly means brushing at least 3 minutes and at least twice a day and flossing every day.

Although the right technique can be picked up, it is advisable to let a dentist or dental hygienist demonstrate how to brush properly.
